Merriam-Webster changes dictionary definition of ‘female’

For decades, the Merriam-Webster dictionary defined “female” as “of, relating to, or
being the sex that bears young or lays eggs.” Below is the Google screen capture of the MW definition prior to
July 2022:

But as the controversy of Trans women in sports rose to a fever pitch in summer of 2022, Merriam-Webster very
quietly added a qualifier, with the sentence now reading that “female” is “of, relating to, or being the sex that
typically has the capacity (our emphasis added) to bear young…:”

Ideas begin their propagation in books. Books bear definitions, shaping attitudes
toward how you understand the world and play it out in real life. Merriam-Webster’s subtle addition of
“typically has the capacity” to the sentence is an effort to erase the connection between sex and biology.
Because females are born with XX chromosomes, and unless born with terrible and rare genetic defects, all
females bear children or lay eggs. The introduction of the term “typically has the capacity” now means that
there isn’t a necessary axiomatic biological connection.

Women may, sometimes, if they feel like it, if they concentrate really hard, come up with the capacity to
produce eggs and bear children. But these abilities are not typical. Females are not born with these qualities. If a
biological man wants to join a women’s athletic competition, the definition of ‘female’ has been changed such
that he meets the requirement of not typically being capable of bearing children. It’s very much like saying that
dogs “typically” bark and since my cat hasn’t barked yet, we can’t rule out he’s not a dog. Because, you know, he
may bark if he suddenly feels like it.

The identity of women is slowly being chiseled away and erased by these subtle changes in definitions. This play
with language is already being used to change the nature of women’s sports. At Chromosome Sports, we are
adamant that only women with XX chromosomes should be able to compete against each other. Biological men
have XY chromosomes and should compete in their own category. Click here Contact Us | Merriam-Webster

children. It’s a built-in feature.
